How Messing With Your Body Clock Can Hurt Your Health

But your sleeping isn’t the only thing your body clock controls, it can also have an impact on your health too.

Everyone has a master clock —called suprachiasmatic nucleus — it sits right over your optic nerves cross in your brain and allows your eyes to signal your brain what time it is.

Your master clock doesn’t just affect your sleep. It controls your appetite, hormones, body temperature and even your wound healing. When you wake up in the morning and start moving around it communicates with your other organs like your liver or stomach, and when your disrupt these rhythms your whole body gets confused.

You can gain weight: When your sleep is mess up, your appetite is one of the first things that goes out of whack. Researches from the University of California at Berkeley found that when you are sleep deprived you are more likely to crave calories dense junk food which causes the pounds to pack on. A study from Sleep also showed that sleeping at weird times can play a role too. The study showed people who woke up mid-afternoon their appetite was highest.

You can develop diabetes: When you are insulin resistant your body isn’t as sensitive to insulin and that causes your pancreases needs to produce more and more insulin to help absorb the glucose. This will result in your body not being able to keep up with the demand and the glucose builds up in your blood which can lead to prediabetes or diabetes. Research at the Endocrine Society’s 2017 meeting found those who work in shifts that have diabetes are less likely to be able to control it than those who stick to regular schedule.

Your mood can tank: Research from the Baylor College of Medicine found that those who work in shifts are more likely to be depressed and to suffer more severe symptoms.
